The art piece draws parallels to natural coral growth patterns by simulating them through mathematical principles known as "Lindenmayer systems," with a twist: the corals are constructed from plastic waste. This thought-provoking imagery raises questions about the potential consequences of widespread plastic pollution on marine life. Moreover, Thiel cleverly incorporates a commentary on technology's environmental impact by tying in the theme of smartphone construction and usage contributing to climate change. As more museum visitors engage with the artwork through their smartphones, the corals gradually lose their vibrant colors due to simulated bleaching.
