"Unexpected Growth," by Tamiko Thiel, is a geolocative, site-specific augmented reality art installation that was commissioned by the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. It made its debut in the exhibition "Programmed: Rules, Codes, and Choreographies in Art, 1965–2018," which ran from September 28, 2018, to April 14, 2019. Visitors can immerse themselves in this unique experience by downloading the "Unexpected Growth" app onto their smartphones. Once on the Whitney Museum's 6th-floor terrace, users can activate the app and explore their surroundings. The augmented reality display transforms the terrace into an underwater coral reef scenario, suggesting a scenario where rising sea levels submerge the museum. Dynamic elements like moving corals responding to virtual waves add to the immersive experience. The art piece draws parallels to natural coral growth patterns by simulating them through mathematical principles known as "Lindenmayer systems," with a twist: the corals are constructed from plastic waste. This thought-provoking imagery raises questions about the potential consequences of widespread plastic pollution on marine life. Moreover, Thiel cleverly incorporates a commentary on technology's environmental impact by tying in the theme of smartphone construction and usage contributing to climate change. As more museum visitors engage with the artwork through their smartphones, the corals gradually lose their vibrant colors due to simulated bleaching. This interactive element encourages viewers to reflect on their role in environmental degradation and prompts a contemplation of sustainable practices."
